City to Wai'anae, Kahuku to Honolulu and everywhere else in between,
heavy rain fell over much of Oahu on March 4th adding up to almost 5
straight weeks of extremely soggy conditions throughout the Islands
and threatening to cancel Hot Nostalgic Nights Drags and Show. However, in what some could call an
unexplained weather phenomenon, Campbell Industrial Park, home to Hawaii Raceway Park, remained clear.
"The
track was dry," said Arnold Dowling, director of public
relations for the event and originator of the 27-year old Hawaii
Independent Cruise Nights. Maybe
it was a sign to keep the track from closing for good.
In
the first couple of hours only a handful of diehards could be
seen at the track and at one point it looked as though the event was
going to be canceled. But after a decisive weather inspection,
Dowling called FM 107.9 Oldies Radio and told D.J. Tom Moffatt to
get the word out that the "weather was beautiful". After a
brief announcement over the air, hot rodders and races alike began
to show up in droves.
Whats
amazing is that everyone who attended Hot Nostalgic Nights Drags
& Show had to "drive through the storm to get to the
track," said Dowling.

Will
there be another Hot Nostalgic Nights Drags & Show? Were
really not sure. Everyone by now has heard that the track will be
closed for good by April 1st. But "there are things in the
works," said Dowling. Without being specific, weve heard a rumor
through the grapevine that they "might work something out and
the track may not shut down".
